Super Insulating Units

Contact

Super Insulated Glass (SIG) has the weight of a double glazed unit with a performance of a triple glazed unit.

Every SIG unit has a polyester film suspended inside double insulating glass. It is a three layer system with two independent air spaces, but has the advantage of weighing the same as a double glazing unit.

Polyester Film

The film is transparent to visible light, and at the same time it reflects remote infra-red radiation and harmful Ultra Violent radiation. Put simply, SIG reflects radiation back to the source; towards the outside in the summer, when you want the room to stay cool, and towards the inside in winter when you want the room to remain warm.

Types of SIG

Depending on the choice of glass composition and gas filling the IG unit will have a u-value of 0.6W/mēK. IQ Glass has chosen to offer the following films:

  • SIG 88 high visible light transmittance of 88% through the film colour neutral (colourless) film

Examples: Residential buildings in particular windows with a north or east orientation Commercial buildings any projects needing improved insulation of windows and minimum reflectance such as: shop fronts, restaurants, airports, schools, hospitals, museums, renovations of historic buildings.

  • SIG SC 75 excellent reduction of IR transmittance with minimum reflectance and high light transmittance

Examples: Residential buildings house fronts with an increased need for control of heat gain and good insulation windows with a south or west orientation Commercial buildings all type of projects where increased reflectance is undesirable but low heat gain is necessary

Did you know that tilting a glazing unit dramatically affects its insulating efficiency?

Installing a glazing unit in a horizontal position compared to a vertical position reduces its insulating performance by 33% for Argon filled and by 29% for Krypton filled units. SIG, by comparison only suffers from a 5-8% decrease in performance. This reduction in efficiency is due to the mechanism of heat exchange between air and gas flows.

Advantages

  • Energy: Superior insulating performance reduces energy costs and enhances comfort (U-value of 0.6W/mēK)
  • Weight: Triple glazing performance but weight of double glazing therefore saving of 10kg/m2
  • UV protection: UV protection helps reduce fading. Fade Protection – blocks 99.5% of UV
  • Comfort: draughts near window are eliminated. The higher inner surface temperature increase the comfort level drastically (required for PassivHaus standards)
  • Acoustics: Noise Reduction reduces noise pollution (2 dB compared to double glazing)
  • Extra value: it has a service life of 25-30 years
  • Solar gain: Superior solar shading reduces expensive cooling costs
  • Variable Performance Characteristics: an almost complete spectrum of light transmission and solar gain can be achieved

Future

Over the last few years the building regulations have become stricter not allowing the same amount of glazing to be used in buildings. This will get ever worse in the near future. By now using the Super Insulated Glass for your buildings it will give much more freedom again in the area of glazing that can be used. Within the design department of IQ Glass we have several projects that have been designed by using SIG.

Super Super Insulating Glass (SSIG)

It is hard to believe but IQ Glass now offers a completely transparent glass unit with an incredible u-value of 0.38W/mēK similar to a well insulated cavity wall!

All those architects struggling with their SAP calculations trying to get glass boxes to perform have the answer with IQ Glass.

Because film is essentially weightless, a second SIG film can be added for even higher insulating performance. With an optional gas filling, dual-film/tri-cavity Super Super Insulating Glass can achieve a U-value of 0.38W/mēK! That is even without having low-e coatings on the glazing just purely with the coatings on the film!
